This morning I woke up in a good mood, which is a very rare event during the work week.
"Thank God it's Friday" I said to myself, as I ate a chocolate from my Advent calendar. It was going to be a good day. Then I looked outside. The street was shining and covered in a layer of ice. Maybe it just looks like ice, and is just wet, I tried to convince myself. I went upstairs to shower, where I found a note posted on the mirror:
"Krysta,
It was freezing rain last night and the roads are pure ice.
Tons of accidents.
Check the radio before you leave and be careful.
Love Mom"
Granted, I knew that this was coming, living in Canada and all, but that doesn't mean that I was ready for it. Since I successfully bypassed last winter, driving on ice has been something that I haven't faced in 2 years. I was quite terrified, to be completely honest.
I listened to the radio, which said to use caution but no major problems reported, so I set off to work. Within 30 seconds, I was sliding towards a parked vehicle, luckily stopping just a few feet away from it. Holy crap, I couldn't handle this. I pulled over and proceeded to call my step-dad Martin to ask for a ride to work. He was busy, but talked me through it, and eventually I made it safely to the highway. Although everybody drove 60 km/hour on the highway and the ditches were lined with cars and semi trucks, driving conditions were much better than in the city.
I had left 15 minutes early for work and arrived 5 minutes late, but I was alive and my car was intact, so all in all it was a succesful day.
Welcome to Winter.
